The same wine for everyone. The guesser asks on their phone and the others, who see the wine on their screens, answer. “Who am I?”, but with wine.

Who am I? But with wine

Remember the tavern scene in Inglourious Basterds? Everyone around the table, each with a card on their forehead bearing a name everyone can see except them. Question by question, each one tries to work out who they are.

Here the card is a glass. We pour the same wine for the whole table: the guesser tastes it blind, without knowing what it is, and the others have it right there on their phone screens. Question by question, the guesser has to work out which wine is in the glass.

Two roles

The guesser

  • Tastes the wine blind: doesn’t know what it is.
  • Asks from their phone: grape, province, vintage, fermentation, ageing or barrel.
  • Picks who to ask, and has to ask everyone before asking anyone again.
  • When sure, says the winery and the wine out loud.

Everyone else

  • Sees the wine in play on their phone: grape, province, vintage, how it was made, winery and name.
  • Only the person asked answers: yes, no or don’t know.
  • The rest stay quiet.
  • When the guesser says it out loud, they vote on whether it’s right.

Each wine is guessed by someone different, in the order you scanned the QR code. There are four wines: if there are 2 or 3 of you, someone guesses more than once.

The rules

Questions, points and the clock

The questions

Picked on the phone, no typing. The answer is always yes, no or don’t know. The winery and the wine aren’t asked: they’re said out loud.

GrapeDoes it have Macabeo?
ProvinceIs it from the province of Toledo?
YearIs it from 2023?
FermentationWas it fermented in stainless steel? (stainless steel, concrete, clay jar or amphora, barrel, large cask)
AgeingWas it aged in barrel? (no ageing, stainless steel, concrete, clay jar or amphora, barrel, large cask, bottle)
BarrelFrench oak? (French oak, American, Central European, chestnut, acacia, cherry wood)

The points

Each wine starts with 100 points. Questions and wrong guesses spend them; guess the wine and you keep what’s left.

Each question−5
A «don’t know» answer0
Each wrong guess out loud (winery or wine)−15
You guess the wineyou keep what’s left
11 minutes pass, you give up or run out of points0

Example: you ask 6 questions and one gets a «don’t know». You say a wrong winery and then get the wine: 100 − 5 × 5 − 15 = 60 points.

The winner has the most points per wine, so it doesn’t matter if someone guesses twice.

The clock

Each wine has 11 minutes, with a countdown on the phone. Four wines: 44 minutes of play, within the one-hour booking.

Ranking and aliases

When you join you can sign up with an alias and a 4-digit PIN (the same account as the blind glass) or play without signing up. The ranking will count points per wine, games, and wines and wineries guessed, from 3 games. Offensive aliases are not allowed: The Net Zero may change them or delete those accounts.
